Résumé
Substantial climate changes have been observed in the southern high latitudes over the last thirty years. Some mechanisms have been proposed to explain those changes but the uncertainties are large, strongly limiting the reliability of the projections for the next centuries. The instrumental station data and satellite observations are too short to allow us to describe the strong multi-decadal variability characteristic of the region and compare the recent changes with those observed in the past. Paleoclimate proxy data provide estimates on longer time scales but they have limitations and existing climate models have large biases at high southern latitudes. No single source of information is thus sufficient, but great progress can be made by taking advantage of their complementarity in joined analysis combining instrumental observations, proxy data and the results of coupled climate model thanks to data assimilation.
